OpenAI announces backing of Model Context Protocol, a cutting-edge standard for interfacing and transmitting data with AI models tailored for enterprises.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has announced the company’s support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standardized protocol for extracting and transmitting data from various sources to AI models for organizations. This protocol, introduced by the competitor company Anthropic at the end of last year, will be integrated into all OpenAI products.

The MCP is now available for use through an SDK for AI developers starting today. The ChatGPT desktop app and Responses API will also soon support MCP integration.

Mike Krieger, head of product at Anthropic, expressed his excitement about OpenAI adopting the MCP standard for connecting with existing data sources.

TLDR: OpenAI is backing the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for data exchange with AI models, supporting it in all their products, and integrating it with their SDK for developers. Integration with the OpenAI API and ChatGPT app is also in the works for the future.
