OpenAI Unveils Revised Model Release Strategy, Prepares to Launch o3 and Retire GPT-5 Ahead of Schedule

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has announced a change in the company’s model release plan. They will be rolling out new model versions called o3 and o4-mini, which are compact reasoning models. Both of these models are set to be released in the next few weeks.

This development harkens back to February when OpenAI initially released the o3-mini model. Just two weeks later, Altman stated that the company aimed to consolidate their AI models to reduce complexity. Users will not have to differentiate between various models, making the reasoning models obsolete and prompting the cancellation of the o3 model at that time.

Nevertheless, the main GPT-5 model will still be released as planned, featuring a comprehensive set of abilities. Altman highlighted significant progress in development, surpassing initial expectations. OpenAI will need to expand resources to accommodate the demand for this model once it is released, with GPT-5 expected to debut in a few months from now, delayed from the original timeline.

Altman also mentioned that there will be a pro version of the o3 model released as well.
