Opera Announces Self-Developed iOS Browser Encompassing Proprietary Engine

Opera has announced that it will develop a web browser for iOS, using its own engine (currently, the desktop version of Opera uses Blink/Chromium) in line with Apple’s new policy allowing the use of alternative engines under the DMA regulations in Europe.

Opera has stated that they will release the Opera One brand web browser in the next few months, following the enforcement of the DMA regulations in Europe in March 2024, but they have not provided further details.

The policy of opening up Apple’s engine is only applicable in Europe. Other browsers like Firefox have criticized this, claiming that it makes browser development more challenging since they have to maintain two versions of the browser – a WebKit version for outside Europe and their own engine version for Europe. However, Opera did not address how they plan to solve this issue.

TLDR: Opera plans to develop a web browser for iOS using its own engine following Apple’s new policy. It will release the Opera One browser in the coming months. This policy only applies in Europe, causing challenges for other browsers like Firefox.
