The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, also known as the MDES, has stated that they have discussed improving the notification system to be faster, following the Prime Minister’s orders after the earthquake incident. Most people have found that SMS notifications are delayed. Some have not received any messages since the incident occurred.
They will simplify the process to ensure that notifications reach the public immediately. Starting with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation sending disaster notifications to TOT immediately upon receiving information from the Department of Meteorology. TOT will then contact mobile service providers to send SMS alerts to the public as quickly as possible.
The TOT confirms that sending disaster SMS alerts is a duty that can be done without needing approval from multiple processes. They have reviewed the procedures to ensure faster notifications and have opened a hotline at 1531 for the public to report earthquake-affected buildings free of charge.
Additionally, TOT is in talks with Apple to unlock the Cell Broadcast system to send alerts to all phones in disaster areas without relying on mobile networks. They are also discussing with LINE Thailand to send alerts through the LINE app.
While the SMS system may limit the number of messages sent, causing delays at times, relevant agencies confirm that they are working to improve the system. They are expanding notification channels to cover more areas, ensuring that the public receives notifications faster and responds promptly to future disaster situations.
