Activision has revealed that the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III has begun implementing sound detection technology to address the toxic behavior of multiplayer players, which has been a chronic issue in the Call of Duty series (and is actually prevalent in most shooting games). Activision has formed a team called Disruptive Behavior specifically to tackle these issues.
The efforts to address these issues by Activision began with the 2019 edition of Modern Warfare, which utilized a text-based moderation system that currently supports filtering messages in 20 languages (including Thai). Over the past year, the system has been able to block 45 million inappropriate messages.
In addition to text moderation, the voice chat side of Call of Duty has a system called ToxMod, which started operating last year (except in the Asian region due to language limitations) and has been continuously improving. It has been able to reduce instances of harassment through voice chat by 43% in Modern Warfare III and Warzone. The use of the ToxMod text filtering system has also helped reduce repetitive harassment issues by 67%, with 80% of warned players not repeating their offenses.
Activision has stated that the implementation of ToxMod has been highly successful and will be expanded to the upcoming Black Ops 6 game, set to launch on October 25th, with the addition of French and German languages to the ToxMod system (except for the Asian region as before).
TLDR: Activision is combatting toxic behavior in Call of Duty games with the use of sound and text detection technology, resulting in significant reductions in harassment incidents. ToxMod has proven effective and will be rolled out to the new Black Ops 6 game with additional language support.
