Pebble Resurfaces with Dual Launch: Monochrome and Color Display Models, boasting a 30-day Battery Life

Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble smartwatch, which was later sold to Fitbit in 2016, has unveiled a new smartwatch after previously announcing it. Google announced the open-source PebbleOS, which prompted Migicovsky to name his new company Core Devices, with the smartwatch brand using the name Core and running on the PebbleOS operating system.

The newly launched smartwatches come in two models. The first model is the Core 2 Duo, featuring a black and white e-paper display, a polycarbonate frame, and priced at $149 (approximately 5,000 baht), with shipments starting in July. The second model, Core Time 2, features a 64-color display, a metal frame, and is priced at $225 (approximately 7,500 baht), with shipments starting in December.

Some may wonder why the first-generation smartwatches are named with a “2.” Migicovsky explained that it pays homage to the Pebble 2 and Pebble Time 2, which underwent several upgrades. Some components used in the production of Pebble 2 and Pebble Time 2 were retained, along with the same suppliers. The term “Duo” is not meant to mimic CPU models but is derived from the phrase “Do-Over.”

The Core 2 Duo has been enhanced from the Pebble 2 with a battery life of 30 days, added speakers, improved vibration notification system, more durable buttons, and the addition of a barometer and compass. Similarly, the Core Time 2 boasts a 30-day battery life, a heart rate sensor, a touchscreen display, and IPX8 water resistance.

These products are produced in limited quantities, with Migicovsky estimating around 10,000 units of the Core 2 Duo. Prices may increase in the future if costs rise. He emphasized the goal of creating smartwatches that he himself would want to use, rather than aiming to become a major global smartwatch company. Pre-orders can be placed at store.rePebble.com.

TLDR: Eric Migicovsky introduces Core Devices, launching the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 smartwatches with enhanced features and limited production, aiming to create user-friendly smartwatches rather than dominate the market.
