PlayStation Portable Console Vulnerable to Hacking, Enabling Retro Gaming on PSP Emulator

Andy Nguyen, a cybersecurity engineer at Google, recently revealed his personal project of hacking the PlayStation Portal. Despite his main profession at Google, Nguyen dedicated his personal time to hack the PlayStation Portal, enabling gameplay not limited to remote play from PS5. This led to the successful installation of the emulator PPSSPP on the Portal, allowing direct play of classic PSP games locally.

Nguyen shared a screenshot of playing GTA Liberty City Stories, an old PSP title, showcasing his achievement on the PlayStation Portal. However, he hinted that he is not ready to disclose the hacking methodology in the near future, indicating further improvements are in progress.

The current details suggest that the hacking of the PS Portal utilized software exploits exclusively, eliminating the need for external hardware assistance. In the past, Nguyen has uncovered vulnerabilities in both PS4 and PS5, showcasing his expertise in this field.
