In a recent announcement from the University of Toronto, there are some minor points raised by Geoffrey Hinton, one of the two scientists awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on Machine Learning. Hinton, who has previously emphasized the dangers of AI, went as far as to resign from Google to have the freedom to criticize openly.
During the Nobel Prize acceptance speech at the University of Toronto, Hinton expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am fortunate to have exceptionally intelligent students who surpass me in brilliance. They go on to do what is right and what is good. What I am especially proud of is that one of my students showed Sam Altman the door.”
Although Hinton did not disclose the name, it is understood that he was referring to Ilya Sutskever, a prominent student who co-founded OpenAI, overseeing the scientific and safety aspects of AI. Sutskever was also part of the board that voted to remove Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI. Despite Altman eventually returning to his position, Sutskever went on to establish Safe Superintelligence, focusing solely on creating safe AI.
