Prime Minister Paetongtan Chinnawat held a consultative meeting with Deputy Prime Ministers, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, AIS-True, and NT to discuss improving the disaster notification system following recent earthquakes.
The Prime Minister mentioned that while waiting for the Cell Broadcast system to be implemented around July, the government must coordinate various tasks. Initially, the following steps are proposed:
1. Revise the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) where the Meteorological Department sends data, the system will immediately send notification messages without the need for analysis, and the messages sent must be concise, accurate, and easily understandable.
2. Use a Temporary Virtual Cell Broadcast (CBE) system for all 70 million Android users to directly receive notifications from the operator.
3. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission are expediting negotiations with Apple to support Virtual Cell Broadcast for 50 million iOS users, sending SMS messages first and allowing direct messaging to the operator.
The Prime Minister emphasized that SMS or Cell Broadcast warning systems are just one method of disaster notification. The government is also preparing various other notification methods such as LINE, Facebook, television broadcasts, specialized platforms, and online platforms. Initial contact has been made with the media and Department of Public Relations for immediate public alerts in case of emergencies.
TLDR: Prime Minister discusses plans to enhance disaster notification systems with key stakeholders and explore alternative notification channels for public safety.
