The European Commission proposes the “AI Continent Action Plan” with a whopping investment of 200 billion euros to establish a minimum of 18 AI data centers. This plan aims to challenge the leadership in AI technology from the United States and China.
The proposal includes investing 200 billion euros to create an “AI factory” building at least 13 new AI data centers, establishing “AI gigafactories” large-scale AI data centers in at least 5 locations (this part alone costs 20 billion euros). Additionally, it aims to increase the number of private AI data centers in Europe by threefold over the next 5-7 years.
Other aspects of the plan suggest strategies for data development, creating high-quality data sets for training AI models for the European market, and encouraging European companies to increase their AI usage, which currently stands at a mere 13.5%. It also focuses on enhancing AI skills among personnel and adjusting immigration laws for non-EU individuals with AI skills to facilitate easier work entry.
