The noteworthy highlight of the Google Pixel 9a this time around is the absence of the Camera Bar on the back, marking a significant design change for Pixel after many years (the Camera Bar design started with Pixel 6 in 2021).
The Pixel 9a design team revealed through Google’s blog the background behind the decision to remove the Camera Bar, citing the “playful, approachable, and family-friendly” personality of the Pixel 9a as the driving force. They have strived to adjust the physical characteristics of the device to match this personality, maintaining the traditional square-cornered camera module but integrating it more seamlessly with the rest of the device, creating a more minimalistic look.
The reason the Pixel 9a can remove the Camera Bar as needed is due to refining the camera module to protrude less, resulting in the back of the device being almost flat. Even when using a case, the camera module does not protrude beyond the case, ensuring the highest quality camera is retained in a similar price range.
Furthermore, switching to a plastic OLED (pOLED) display has reduced the thickness of the screen, allowing for increased battery capacity without changing the overall thickness of the device. The display itself is brighter and features a 120Hz refresh rate.
The final highlight is the Iris purple color of the Pixel 9a, inspired by the Purple-ish color of the Pixel 3a that many people loved. The Iris color has been refined with added blue tones, but for those who prefer brighter colors, the Peony pink color is also available.

TLDR: The Google Pixel 9a introduces a fresh design without the Camera Bar, reflecting a playful and family-friendly personality. The camera module is seamlessly integrated, the display is brighter with increased battery life, and a new Iris purple color option is available alongside the classic Peony pink.
