Razer Fined $1.1 Million by FTC for Exaggerated N95 Mask Advertising

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has fined Razer $1.17 million for misleading advertisements regarding the Razer Zephyr mask, claiming it meets N95 standards when in reality it does not. Despite using the same filter as N95 masks, the Zephyr mask failed to meet the required standards upon testing.

Introduced in 2021, the Razer Zephyr mask boasts 16.8 million RGB color options and is equipped with N95 dust filters. The company claimed it was registered with the FDA and could filter out 99% of bacteria. However, FTC investigations revealed these claims to be exaggerated, as Razer did not submit the mask for FDA testing and it did not meet N95 standards.

Razer agreed to withdraw the misleading ads in January 2022 and offered refunds to customers. The FTC has proposed a $1.1 million fine as part of a settlement agreement, with Razer’s response pending.

TLDR: FTC fines Razer for false advertising regarding N95 standards for the Razer Zephyr mask, prompting the company to withdraw ads and face potential financial penalties.
