Resignation Announcement: Adam Selipsky Steps Down as CEO of AWS After Just 3 Years of Leadership

In March 2021, AWS announced the appointment of Adam Selipsky as CEO, replacing Andy Jassy who moved on to take the CEO position at Amazon. Just 3 years later, Selipsky stepped down, with Matt Garman set to take over.

Jassy sent an email to all AWS employees, stating that he and Selipsky had agreed that Selipsky would only hold the position for a few years (reason not disclosed) and would help pave the way for the next generation of leaders. Selipsky has made significant contributions to AWS, particularly in Generative AI services, and has maintained AWS’s leadership in the cloud market.

Garman, like Selipsky, is an AWS veteran, starting as an MBA intern in 2005 before becoming a full-time employee the following year as a Product Manager. He played a role in creating AWS’s first SLA policy, developing new features, and pricing products. He later became the first Product Manager for EC2, overseeing the development of EC2 and EBS initially, before becoming the General Manager of the entire Compute product group in 2016. He then moved on to lead sales, marketing, support, and Professional Services globally at AWS, accumulating 18 years with the company. Garman is set to become CEO on June 3rd.
