Resumption of Regular Sales for Japanese Railway Reloadable Cards Suica and Pasmo Following Previous Chip Shortage.

IC Cards, such as the well-known Suica in Japan, have ceased the sales of unregistered cards since June 2023 due to chip shortages impacting card production. East Japan Railway (JR East) and regional railway companies temporarily halted the sale of Suica and Pasmo cards, expanding only to registered cards. However, in 2024, sales resumed specifically for registered cards.

Recently, JR East and Tokyo-area railway companies announced the resumption of selling non-registered Suica and Pasmo rechargeable cards starting from March 1. These cards will not display the owner’s name, with service providers ensuring sufficient card stocks and no more shortages.

Moreover, JR East unveiled plans to enhance tourist convenience by launching the Suica Mobile app for iOS users on March 6. This app allows iPhone users to use their devices as IC Cards without purchasing a Suica card and will include future train seat reservation functions. Cards registered through this app will be designated as Welcome Suica for tourists, with a 180-day usage period, differing from the standard green Suica card.

TLDR: IC Cards sales in Japan temporarily halted due to chip shortages but have now resumed for registered cards. JR East and Tokyo railway companies reintroduced selling non-registered Suica and Pasmo cards without the owner’s name. Additionally, JR East launched the Suica Mobile app for iOS users for enhanced convenience, offering features like cardless transactions and seat reservations.
