Revealed: Intel Unveils Lunar Lake Next-Gen CPU with Tripled NPU Performance, Capable of Achieving 100 TOPS on the Chip

Intel has announced details of their upcoming next-generation CPU, code-named Lunar Lake, set to be released by the end of this year. They claim that it will have AI performance tripled or a chip’s performance of 100 TOPS (Trillions/Tera Operations per Second).

The NPU chip performance of the current Intel Core Ultra (Meteor Lake) is currently around 10 TOPS (with AMD recently boasting a faster operation at 16 TOPS). Meanwhile, the NPU chip of Lunar Lake has been announced to operate at 40-45 TOPS, tripling the performance from Meteor Lake.

The number 100 TOPS from Intel is referred to as Platform TOPS, which calculates the combined performance of the CPU, GPU, and NPU altogether (with Intel not providing detailed breakdown, but Tom’s Hardware estimates 50 TOPS from GPU and 5-10 TOPS from the CPU). This will enable running Microsoft Copilot locally on the chip without needing internet connectivity, as previously announced.

TLDR: Intel’s upcoming Lunar Lake CPU boasts tripled AI performance at 100 TOPS, outperforming their current Meteor Lake chip. The Platform TOPS calculation combines CPU, GPU, and NPU performance, allowing for local Microsoft Copilot usage.
