Luigi’s footprints were discovered in the game Super Mario 64, which was released in 1996. Interestingly, the actual game did not include Luigi as a playable character. These footprints were actually found in a prototype version of the game, showcased at the Nintendo Space World event in 1995 for the Nintendo 64 console.
In a 21-minute YouTube video by the channel “Now in Game Channel,” there is a one-second glimpse of Mario and Luigi in Super Mario 64. This marks the first time we get to see Luigi in the game beyond the original game files leaked in 2020, which contained the character’s original model.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the game’s director, revealed in a 1996 interview that Luigi was initially intended to be the second playable character in various mini-games. However, due to memory constraints and considering that the first Nintendo 64 consoles only came with one controller, the decision was made to remove Luigi from the game and omit the multiplayer mode.
Nevertheless, in Super Mario 64 DS, released for the Nintendo DS console, a multiplayer mode was introduced, allowing up to four players to play as Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and Wario.

TLDR: Luigi’s footprints were discovered in the prototype version of Super Mario 64. Although Luigi wasn’t included as a playable character in the game, a YouTube video by Now in Game Channel briefly showcases Mario and Luigi. Luigi’s absence can be attributed to memory constraints and the lack of multiplayer compatibility on the original Nintendo 64 console. However, Super Mario 64 DS allows for multiplayer gameplay with Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and Wario as playable characters.
