Apple TV+ original film “Wolfs,” starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, garnered immense success in streaming, boasting record-breaking viewership numbers on the platform. However, plans for a sequel to this film have been abruptly terminated by the directors themselves.
Deadline interviewed director Jon Watts (known for “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home”) regarding this matter. He revealed that Apple initially decided to cancel the wide theatrical release of “Wolfs” before opting for a sudden streaming release, contrary to what was previously discussed. Apple did not provide a clear explanation for this decision before announcing the change.
Furthermore, Apple announced that they had agreed to continue with a sequel to the film, despite requesting the immediate removal of their names. Additionally, Apple refunded the initial payment for the sequel’s scriptwriting. The director expressed his love for the film and desire to create a sequel; however, the project was canceled because he could no longer trust Apple as a creative partner.
“Wolfs” made its debut at the Venice International Film Festival before a limited theatrical release in the United States on September 20th, followed by an immediate release on Apple TV+ on September 27th. This deviated from the original plan of a wide theatrical release, with reports suggesting that Apple was unsure about the film’s profitability in theaters (in Thailand, it premiered in theaters on September 19th).
TLDR: Apple TV+ film “Wolfs” achieved streaming success but the planned sequel was abruptly canceled by the directors. Apple’s decision to switch from theatrical to streaming release caused uncertainty, leading to the cancellation of the sequel.
