Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current CEO, Hideaki Nishino, revealed during the Sony Business Segment Meeting 2024 Game & Network Services Segment that the PlayStation 5 is the most profitable game console, raking in a staggering $10 billion in profits in just 4 years, compared to the 7 years it took for the previous generation PlayStation 4 to achieve $9 billion in profits.
Nishino emphasized the continuing importance of the PS4 market, with its monthly active users standing at 49 million – equal to that of the PS5. However, the user base of the PS5 has seen significant growth, with more player engagement than its predecessor. Nishino expressed optimism for the future outlook.
According to SIE data, current PS5 users are spending more on gaming compared to PS4 users. Spending on DLCs and expansions has increased by 176%, on services like PS Plus by 57%, and on accessories by 34% – although game purchases have decreased by 12%.
Hermen Hulst, the CEO overseeing game studio productions at SIE, mentioned plans to develop existing popular franchises further, bolstered by Live Service games and expanding to new devices. Story-driven single-player games will debut on the PS5 first, while Live Service games will launch simultaneously on PS5 and PC.
