Google has started notifying Android app developers to use the Photo Picker API for accessing media files, including images and videos, on users’ phones. This API allows for limiting and controlling access to files without needing full access.
Google has introduced the Photo Picker API since Android 13 in 2022, with retroactive effect to previous versions as well. Many popular apps currently use Photo Picker, but there are still several apps that request access to the entire image library unnecessarily.
Previously, the use of the Photo Picker API was a recommendation for developers, but Google is expected to make it a requirement for app approval on the Play Store next year. Additionally, apps will be evaluated to determine if accessing the entire image library is essential for their core functionality. If not, full access will not be granted.
