Revolutionary Proton Email Application for Desktops: A Browser-Free Solution Compatible with Windows, MacOS, and Linux

Proton, also known as ProtonMail, initially launched its own email client app “Proton Mail” for Windows and Mac, while Linux had only a beta version available. Previously, Proton offered “secure email” services only through web apps and mobile clients, but eventually decided to develop a desktop client as well. This served as an alternative for users to access their email without relying on browsers, which could potentially expose their data to advertisers (for example, Proton cites Chrome’s Privacy Sandbox, which collects data directly from the browser instead of using cookies on web pages).

According to Proton, the desktop client maintains the familiar UI from the web version but incorporates features tailored for desktop usage. These include light/dark themes, OS notification integration, and quicker switching between email and calendar screens compared to the web version. Additionally, there is an option to import emails from Outlook or Gmail into the Proton Mail client.

The only drawback of the Proton Mail desktop client is that it is not free; users need to subscribe to the Proton Unlimited premium package priced at $12.99 per month. However, there is a free trial available for 14 days.

TLDR: Proton introduces a desktop client for its secure email services, offering familiar UI elements with added desktop-specific features, but requires a premium subscription for full access.
