During last night’s Wanderlust press conference, Apple took the opportunity to highlight their efforts in minimizing the environmental impact of their product manufacturing. In addition to announcing the carbon neutrality of the Apple Watch, they also addressed the issue of accessories.
Specifically, Apple revealed that they will no longer sell any accessory made from leather, whether it be phone cases or watchbands. While leather has been a popular material, its production process has significant environmental consequences. To replace leather, Apple has introduced a fabric called FineWoven. This material closely resembles leather but has a lower carbon footprint and is made up of 68% recycled materials. It will be used for iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands.
This change also affects the special edition Hermès Apple Watches, although they will continue to be sold (contrary to previous reports). The new Hermès watchbands are now made from different materials, such as woven fabric and rubber, instead of leather. Similarly, the Nike edition of Apple Watches now feature new Sport Bands and Sport Loops, which contain 32% and 68% recycled rubber, respectively.
TLDR: At their recent press conference, Apple announced their commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their products. As part of this effort, they will no longer sell accessories made from leather. Instead, they have introduced FineWoven fabric, which closely resembles leather but has a lower carbon footprint. This change applies to all Apple Watch bands, including those in collaboration with Hermès and Nike.
