Robotic Taxi Insights in China: Baidu’s Apollo Excels, Government Mandates Black Box Installation for Data Collection

In early April, the Ride AI Summit was held in Los Angeles, focusing on advancements in autonomous vehicles. Forbes highlighted the progress of autonomous taxi services, or Robotaxis, in China. Currently, China has four major Robotaxi service providers: Baidu’s Apollo, WeRide, Pony.ai, and AutoX.

Pony.ai’s representative shared insights on the stringent regulations governing autonomous taxi services in China. Oversight agencies conduct thorough inspections at every stage and define testing phases, from requiring a human driver present behind the wheel initially to offering driverless services under remote supervision. Interestingly, China mandates a black box-like device installed in vehicles to record any disruptions by intervening parties during autonomous operations, with reports submitted periodically to relevant authorities. This contrasts with the US, which calls for annual reports with customizable safety content.

Forbes’ report also mentioned YouTuber Sophia Tung’s firsthand experience with Robotaxis, including a lackluster ride on Apollo version 5 three months prior in Huhan. Despite a slow operation requiring human intervention, Tung revisited China to try Apollo version 6, which boasted software and hardware upgrades. The improved ride, devoid of a human passenger but under remote control, featured added luxuries like electric massage seats, all at a production cost of only $28,000. Tung’s discovery underscores the marginal differences in basic autonomous taxi development, suggesting future competition may revolve around in-car luxuries.
