Microsoft has released the stable version of Windows Server 2025, now in GA (generally available) status, with a trial image available for download for 180 days. Windows Server 2025 is a long-term servicing channel (LTSC) server operating system that follows up on Windows Server 2022, with a ten-year support cycle (5+5 years) until 2034.
One of the key new features of Windows Server 2025 is Hotpatching, which allows for installing some patches without the need for a reboot, enhancing security features for Active Directory, enabling faster and more secure SMB over QUIC operation, supporting DTrace for real-time system performance monitoring, introducing software-defined network (SDN) multisite features, and GPU partitioning for AI processing.
On the UI side, the desktop has been redesigned to adopt a Windows 11 style, supporting widgets, adding the new Windows Terminal and Task Manager apps, introducing Dev Drive with ReFS file system for faster file copying, and providing Bluetooth support for mouse, keyboard, and headphones – a first for Windows Server operating systems. Additionally, it now supports compressing files in Zip, 7z, and TAR formats similar to Windows 11.
TLDR: Microsoft unveils Windows Server 2025 with enhanced security, performance, and UI features, following a ten-year support cycle until 2034.
