Ruler of the State of California overturns AI control law SB-1047 after academics protest

Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, has utilized the SB-1047 law to regulate large-scale artificial intelligence projects that exceed $100 million in funding within the United States. This decision came after opposition from researchers such as Andrew Ng and Fei Fei Li.

Newsom acknowledged that the law was drafted with good intentions but argued that it did not limit the usage of AI models in high-risk environments, hence leading to overall control.

SB-1047 increases the liability of developers of AI models, requiring them to undergo security checks if utilized in other software, with the potential to cause damages exceeding $500 million in the US. This process has received criticism from Andrew Ng, who compared it to other fundamental technologies that may have uses in various industries.

Despite the backlash against SB-1047, Newsom aims to emphasize the importance of regulating the use of AI in other aspects that he supports, such as controlling the creation of deepfake pornography or enforcing disclosures regarding images created with AI.

TLDR: Governor Newsom implements SB-1047 to regulate large AI projects; opposing views arise from researchers like Andrew Ng, while Elon Musk supports the law for controlling AI usage in various sectors.
