Rumbling Return: Thunderbird Desktop Set to Release Monthly Editions, Shifting from Yearly Releases

Mozilla Thunderbird, the desktop version, is set to return to a monthly release cycle as the primary mode of operation, replacing the previous Extended Support Release (ESR) system that provided long-term support with yearly releases.

Traditionally, Thunderbird has released new versions through 2 channels: monthly Releases and yearly ESRs. Previously, users were able to download ESR versions that bundled features released throughout the year, but there were limitations as each ESR version differed significantly. The new approach now recommends downloading the Release version instead.

Starting from version 124.0 in the previous year, Thunderbird has been releasing monthly Releases. The change in version download strategy will take effect in Thunderbird 135.0 in March 2025. Existing users who are on the ESR version will continue to use ESR without any changes, but they can manually switch channels if desired.

TLDR: Mozilla Thunderbird is transitioning to a monthly release cycle for its desktop version, replacing the previous yearly Extended Support Release system. Users can continue using ESR or switch to the new monthly Release version.
