[Rumor] iOS 18 to Emphasize AI for General Usage, Home Screen Icons Customizable with Color Tones

The latest issue of the weekly newsletter “Power On” by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg delves into the upcoming iOS 18 and macOS 15 operating systems set to be unveiled by Apple at the next month’s WWDC conference.

One of the key highlights is the AI capabilities, where Apple, in an effort to stay ahead of its competitors, is planning to introduce AI under the strategy named Project Greymatter. This will focus on incorporating AI into everyday tasks through various apps rather than showcasing competitive advancements. This includes features like voice-to-text conversion, AI-powered image editing, smarter Spotlight, email response suggestions, and Apple’s anticipated selling point of custom emoji creation with AI.

Most of the AI processing will be done on-device, with some parts being handled in the cloud, leveraging Apple’s hardware capabilities. Additionally, Siri will sport a more natural voice and will work on Apple’s LLM. Apple Watch will also see enhanced functionality through Siri.

While Apple’s AI Chatbot feature is a selling point, it still faces tough competition from other tech giants. At WWDC, Apple will introduce various partners, with OpenAI already finalized, while negotiations with Google are ongoing.

Despite the seemingly lackluster AI features, Apple believes the large user base ready to embrace these features will solidify its position as a key player in the AI industry.

Aside from AI features, iOS 18 will bring a new addition where users can customize the color of their home screen icons, catering to those who like to curate their app aesthetics and have more freedom in arranging their icons.
