Samsung Increasing Usage of Exynos Chipsets in Their Mobile Devices Due to Escalating Costs of Competitor Semiconductors by 30%

Pulse, a South Korean business news website, reports that Samsung is increasing its use of Exynos chips in its mobile phones due to the rising cost of chips from other companies like Snapdragon and MediaTek.

According to Samsung’s financial report, the cost of acquiring chips for their mobile business unit (Device Experience or DX) reached $8.87 billion in 2023, a 3.1% increase from 2022 and a significant jump from 2021. Samsung stated in documents that chip prices for 2023 have increased by 30% compared to 2022.

While Samsung attempted to use Exynos chips in the Galaxy S22, performance and heating issues forced them to switch to Snapdragon for the Galaxy S23, leading to higher chip costs. However, they are set to reintroduce Exynos in some capacity for the Galaxy S24 this year.

Pulse also points out that Samsung is transitioning from using MediaTek chips in their lower-priced Galaxy A smartphones in 2023 to Exynos in 2024, as seen in the upcoming Galaxy A25, A35, and A55 models.
