Shuji Utsumi Ascends to the Helm as Chairman, CEO, and CFO of Sega America, Spearheading the European CFO Reign

Sega has announced the promotion of Shuji Utsumi to the position of President, CEO, and Representative Director of Sega America, as well as CEO of Sega Europe, effective April 1, 2024. Utsumi brings a wealth of experience in the gaming industry, starting from his instrumental role in the founding of Sony Computer Entertainment and the launch of the first PlayStation in North America.

In 1999, Utsumi played a key role in the successful international launch of the Dreamcast gaming console before leaving Sega to work for Disney Interactive Asia. He played a significant part in fostering the relationship between Disney and Square Enix, resulting in the creation of the Kingdom Hearts franchise.

Returning to Sega in 2019 as Chief Strategy Officer and Deputy President of Sega Japan, Utsumi has now been promoted to President, CEO, and Representative Director of Sega America, as well as CEO of Sega Europe within the years 2021 to 2023.

In recent interviews, Utsumi, an esteemed executive, has expressed his pride in Xbox’s interest in acquiring Sega, even though the company is not up for sale. Sega is also preparing to revive and revamp its other franchises, capitalizing on the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
