SoftBank has announced the acquisition of Ampere Computing, a company specializing in designing chips based on Arm architecture for high-performance servers and AI workloads. In this deal, SoftBank is paying a whopping $6.5 billion in cash. Once the deal is finalized, Ampere will become a subsidiary of the SoftBank Group without any change in the company’s name.
As per the agreement, SoftBank will acquire all shares of Ampere from existing shareholders including Carlyle and Oracle, who were previous investors in the company.
Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, emphasized the increasing need for high processing power in the future of AI. Leveraging Ampere’s expertise in designing high-performance processing chips will further enhance SoftBank’s vision.
