Sonic pulls the plug on LittleBigPlanet 3 server, bidding farewell to player-created content across 10 million scenes.

Sony has officially announced the permanent closure of the servers for the game LittleBigPlanet 3, released in 2014 on the PS4, citing technical issues as the reason.

It’s not uncommon for games that have been around for a while to have their servers shut down, and in the case of LittleBigPlanet 3, which has reached its 10th anniversary, it may seem like a natural progression. However, what set LittleBigPlanet 3 apart was its ability for players to design their own levels and share them with others through online user-generated content. Sony had previously stated that there were up to 10 million levels available, all of which will disappear once the servers are closed.

Players of LittleBigPlanet 3 will still be able to play the single-player mode normally, as well as access and play any levels they have created and stored locally on their devices.

The LittleBigPlanet series, developed by Sumo Digital, a UK-based game studio, and published by Sony, includes a total of 4 main installments, with the latest being Sackboy: A Big Adventure released in 2020 on both the PS4 and PS5.

The preservation of older games has been gaining more attention, with Microsoft recently announcing the formation of a team dedicated to this cause.

TLDR: Sony has announced the closure of LittleBigPlanet 3 servers due to technical issues, but players can still enjoy the single-player mode and locally stored levels. The trend of preserving older games is on the rise.
