Sony announces the cessation of Blu-Ray disc production in February 2025, along with other discontinued data storage products such as MiniDiscs, MD, and MiniDV tapes. Having previously halted Blu-Ray production for general consumers earlier this year, Sony continued manufacturing for corporate clients. However, due to persistent losses, the company has decided to cease all production.
Originally introduced in 2000 and widely released in 2006 as the successor to DVDs, Blu-Ray faced competition from HD DVDs by Toshiba. Emerging victorious, Blu-Ray became the industry standard for film production through Sony’s network and integration with PlayStation 3.
