Sony Group Corp. has issued a temporary halt on the production of PlayStation VR 2 until the outstanding stock is cleared. Reports from undisclosed sources at Bloomberg reveal that Sony had previously produced over 2 million units of PlayStation VR 2, but sales fell short of targets and continued to decline, leading to a surplus of stock.
Data from IDC indicates a decreasing trend in quarterly shipments of PSVR2 since its launch, contrasting significantly with the increasing shipments of VR headsets from Meta, especially in the fourth quarter of 2023, with over 1.3 million units sold. IDC forecasts a 31.5% growth in the VR market from 2023 to 2028 due to the introduction of Apple Vision Pro.
The main issue seems to stem from the lack of standout games for PSVR2, despite its impressive hardware capabilities. Sony has been reluctant to develop exclusive games post-launch, with only around 40 games available, majority of which are ports from other platforms. Only 3 exclusive games are offered, with Horizon Call of the Mountain being the sole true VR game. The other 2, Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil 4 Remake, only feature VR modes for the standard games. Sony is currently working on making PSVR2 compatible with PCs by the end of this year.

TLDR: Sony suspends PSVR2 production due to excess stock from poor sales. VR market sees growth, but Sony struggles with lack of exclusive games for PSVR2. Compatibility with PC in development.
