SpaceX Halts Starlink Service Rollout in Vietnam

The renowned Reuters news agency reported that SpaceX, originally planning to provide internet services through the Starlink satellites in Vietnam, has now been suspended.

Previously, Vietnam confirmed multiple discussions between SpaceX and the Ministry of Information to offer satellite internet services in the country. This initiative was part of an upgrade to the basic internet infrastructure to support remote mountainous and sea areas. However, negotiations were halted at the end of last year as Vietnam was reluctant to grant special privileges to SpaceX due to regulations prohibiting foreign companies from holding more than a 50% stake, posing negotiating challenges.

In another negotiation channel, SpaceX proposed providing internet services exclusively for Vietnam’s military operations since the country requires internet access for the South China Sea region.

TLDR: SpaceX’s plan to provide Starlink internet services in Vietnam has been suspended due to regulatory challenges regarding foreign ownership restrictions, leading to negotiations focused on catering exclusively to military needs in the region.
