Microsoft has unveiled the SQL Server 2025 database, featuring a crucial new capability to support vector search for AI data processing. SQL Server 2025 stores vectors and indexes using DiskANN technology, allowing for efficient searching of vector connections. Additionally, it enables connections to external AI models through T-SQL and REST API, as well as supports GraphQL via Data API Builder and native JSON formats.
On the security front, it integrates with Microsoft Entra (formerly Azure AD), and the Optional Parameter Plan Optimization (OPPO) feature helps the database choose the most efficient execution methods. It also supports mirroring databases in Microsoft Fabric, near real-time replication in Microsoft OneLake, and manages organizational database versions through Azure Arc.
Currently in the preview stage, SQL Server 2025 is scheduled for a stable release next year.
TLDR: Microsoft’s SQL Server 2025 introduces vector search for AI, DiskANN technology, and various optimization features for efficient database management. Scheduled for release next year.
