The Eclipse Foundation has announced the release of Theia IDE (pronounced “Thi-ah”) version 1.50, marking its first stable release by removing the Beta label and recommending it for general use. Eclipse Theia is an extension of the open-source Visual Studio Code, supporting both desktop and browser-based operation. The project started in 2017, divided into two parts: Theia platform for organizations to build custom IDEs (such as Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces and Arm Mbed Studio) and Theia IDE as the standard IDE of Eclipse Theia itself (originally known as Theia Blueprint).
The Theia IDE is now officially released, offering features similar to VS Code, including components like Language Server Protocol (LSP), Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP), and Monaco Code Editor. It also supports extensions from VS Code (via the Open VSX project). The notable difference at present lies in the development model by the open-source community and browser-based operation feature.
The long-term goal of the Eclipse project is to leverage the Theia platform as the foundation for developing other tools and IDEs in the future.
