Valve has revealed statistics on the usage of game controllers on the Steam platform, with the proportion of joystick usage increasing from 5% in 2018 to 15% currently, or tripling in size. When considering all joystick-based gameplay sessions, 42% utilize Steam Input.
When breaking down the popular hardware usage, it can be divided as follows:
59% of sessions use an Xbox Controller (including all sub-models)
26% of sessions use a PlayStation Controller
10% of sessions use the Steam Deck controller
Valve has stated that in response to the increased use of game controllers, the Steam development team must adapt accordingly. This includes improving the Big Picture mode for better controller functionality, adding new controller customization options, enhancing gyro aiming for more accurate shooting, as well as collaborating with Sony and Microsoft to fully support controller features. Currently, Steam automatically recognizes and supports PlayStation controllers and now also supports the back buttons of the Xbox Elite Controller in addition to regular Xbox controllers.
In addition to controllers from major gaming companies, Steam also supports the Horipad for Steam controller developed in collaboration with Japanese company Hori. This controller features a layout similar to the Xbox controller but includes shortcuts specifically for Steam.
