Strategic Acquisition Yields Results: Microsoft Surpasses Sony with Popular PS5 Game Titles

The acquisition of a large number of game studios by Microsoft has made them the owner of a wide range of popular gaming franchises such as Minecraft, Overwatch, Doom, Fallout, Call of Duty, and Diablo, all of which are cross-platform games.

Tweaktown recently analyzed the popularity of games on the PlayStation Store in the United States, based on data shown to players, and found that Microsoft currently owns 7 of the top 25 games on the PS5 chart, surpassing Sony itself which has 5 games on the chart.

Microsoft’s games on the chart include recent acquisitions like Call of Duty and Overwatch 2, games introduced to PlayStation through new policies like Sea of Thieves and Grounded, as well as benefiting from the resurgence of the popular Fallout series.

On the Sony side, games like Helldivers II, Stellar Blade, and Rise of the Ronin are developed by other studios but distributed by Sony, following their announcement not to release new 1st party games until 2025.

Top-ranking Microsoft games include Call of Duty, Overwatch 2, Sea of Thieves (pre-order), Fallout 4, Minecraft, Fallout 76, and Grounded. On the other hand, top-ranking Sony games include MLB The Show 24, Helldivers II, Destiny 2, Stellar Blade (pre-order), and Rise of the Ronin. Other games in the chart are from major publishers like Take-Two (3 games) and EA (3 games), with Fortnite leading as a popular free-to-play game.

TLDR: Microsoft’s acquisition of game studios has propelled them to own popular gaming franchises, dominating the top charts on the PlayStation Store, with games like Call of Duty, Overwatch 2, and Fallout among the top-ranking titles. Sony also has its share of successful games like MLB The Show 24 and Destiny 2 on the charts, while other big publishers like Take-Two and EA have multiple titles featured as well.
