Strategic Investment by Amazon in Small-Scale Nuclear Power Plant Aims for Carbon Neutrality by 2040

Amazon announces an agreement to utilize nuclear energy with 3 companies, focusing on projects using Small Modular Reactors (SMR) that can be built close to the direct energy usage area. The first two companies, Energy Northwest and X-Energy, are involved in this project. Amazon has signed a contract to purchase electricity from the installation of Xe-100 reactors, with the initial delivery of four units to Energy Northwest generating 320MW of power, expandable up to 960MW with future phases. X-Energy has also secured $500 million in funding to develop reactors concurrently. Despite the focus on small-scale plants, X-Energy anticipates a total of 5GW of power generation by 2039.
Another agreement involves exploring the feasibility of establishing an SMR plant with Dominion Energy, aiming for a 300MW facility. AWS previously set up data centers near nuclear power plants earlier this year. Today’s announcement signals a serious commitment to nuclear energy by both companies.

TLDR: Amazon partners with 3 companies to explore nuclear energy options, emphasizing Small Modular Reactors for efficient power generation.
