Striking: America Unveils Two Exaflop Supercomputers, Including the Grace CPU Making Top 10

TOP500 has announced the rankings of supercomputers for the first half of 2024, with the top 1-5 still being the same as the previous round. The reigning champion is Frontier, holding the number one spot for the fifth consecutive time with a slight performance increase to 1.206 exaflops. Of particular interest is the second-ranked Aurora, which previously was not fully operational with a performance of 585.34 petaflops. This time, the machine is fully installed and the performance has increased to 1.012 exaflops, making it the second supercomputer to break the 1 exaflops barrier successfully.

In third place is Microsoft Azure’s Eagle, followed by Japan’s former champion Fugaku in fourth, and Finland’s LUMI in fifth, maintaining their previous rankings.

The noteworthy change in the top 10 is the addition of a new machine named Alps from the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, powered by NVIDIA Grace CPU paired with Hopper GH200 GPU, making it the top-ranking Arm supercomputer with a performance of 270 petaflops.

Seventh-ranked Leonardo from Italy and eighth-ranked MareNostrum 5 ACC from Spain are both part of the EuroHPC project in Europe. Ninth place goes to the former global champion Summit, and the tenth spot is held by NVIDIA Eos using Xeon Platinum + H100.

In the top 500 supercomputers, there are 195 machines utilizing accelerators (an increase from 185 in the previous round), with popular chips being NVIDIA Ampere with 84 machines and NVIDIA Volta with 48 machines. Intel still dominates the market share with 62.80% of all systems, although it has decreased from 67.80% in the previous round, while AMD’s share has increased from 28% to 31.40%.
