Successful Reconnection: NASA Links Helicopter Maven, Ingenuity, amidst a Compelling Martian Flight Hiatus Spanning Two Solitary Solar Cycles

NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has successfully retrieved its connection link after losing its signal during its 72nd vertical takeoff and landing flight on January 18th. In the meantime, data is being examined to determine if the helicopter is still operational.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) team has instructed the Perseverance rover to enter long-duration listening mode, allowing it to eventually reconnect with Ingenuity.

Since its deployment to Mars in 2021, Ingenuity has completed a total of 72 flights, with a cumulative flight time of 128 minutes, covering a distance of 17 kilometers, and reaching a maximum altitude of 24 meters.

Last year, Ingenuity experienced a two-month communication hiatus with NASA after a long-range test flight. However, that flight was intentionally designed to exceed the communication range.

TLDR: NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has successfully reestablished its link after losing signal during its 72nd flight. The Perseverance rover has been instructed to prepare for a potential reconnection. Ingenuity has completed 72 flights, covering a distance of 17km, and reaching a maximum altitude of 24m. Last year, Ingenuity intentionally exceeded its communication range during a test flight, resulting in a two-month communication gap.
