Survey Results: Game Developers See No Future for VR Gaming, 56% Say It’s Not Growing

The website Game Developer conducted a survey on the future of VR gaming, which seems rather bleak. In response to the questionnaire, 56% of game developers believe that the VR gaming market is either declining or at least not growing. Meanwhile, 23% think that the market is slowly growing, and only 1% believe it is thriving.

Another question raised is whether game companies will shift towards VR gaming in the next 5 years. A majority of 53% firmly say “Never,” followed by 13% who think it will take longer than 5 years, with only 3% looking to enter the VR gaming space within the next 12 months.

When asked about the main challenges of the VR gaming market, 88% cited limited player base and market size as a significant obstacle. Additionally, 38% mentioned the difficulty of creating a good VR gaming experience.

Opinions on certain hardware, like the Apple Vision Pro, impacting the gaming market were divided. 72% believe that it has no effect, with only 6% considering that it may influence them to create VR games in the future.

Currently, the Meta Quest appears to be the dominant player in the VR hardware market, as the PS VR2 has significantly quieted down. Companies must pivot to connect with PCs for gaming and reduce product prices accordingly.

TLDR: The future of VR gaming appears uncertain, with developers divided on market growth and hardware influences.
