Survey results indicate that software projects utilizing Agile methodology have a significantly higher likelihood of failure than usual, at an alarming rate of 268%.

Engprax is a consulting company specializing in software audits, conducting surveys of 600 software engineers in the United States and the United Kingdom. The survey results revealed that several aspects of the Agile Manifesto significantly increase the likelihood of software projects failing. Overall, projects following Agile guidelines are 268% more likely to fail compared to those that do not.

The report identifies various directions within the Agile Manifesto, such as prioritizing usable software over comprehensive documentation, collaborating more with customers rather than focusing on contract negotiation, and being responsive to change rather than following a plan. Projects adhering to these guidelines have a higher chance of failure. For example, having clear requirement documentation increases the project’s success rate by 50%, and starting with clear requirements before the project commences can boost success rates to 97%.

Other factors, like engineers feeling comfortable discussing problems, can increase the likelihood of success by 87%. (The report also found that programmers in the UK are less likely to discuss problems than those in the US.) Writing requirements based on real problems can increase the success rate by 54%.
