Survey results on Japanese individuals aged 20-29 reveal that 19% admit to indulging in in-game purchases affecting their daily expenses.

SMBC Consumer Finance, a Japanese financial company, has released the results of a survey on spending behavior of a sample group aged 20-29 (20s) consisting of 1,000 individuals in Japan during the past month of February.

The report reveals intriguing data regarding in-app game spending. 18.8% admitted to overspending on in-game purchases, leading to insufficient daily funds, while 23.9% expressed regret over spending money on games to the point of financial strain.

The survey also inquired whether individuals agree with the statement “I am willing to spend money on games if it provides advantages.” 17.9% agreed (males 23.8%, females 12.0%), marking an increase from 12.3% in 2024. Another statement “I don’t enjoy games if I don’t spend money on them” garnered agreement from 20.8%.

Within the sample group, 21.6% reported an increase in game spending from 15.8% in 2024. However, the average amount spent decreased to 4,247 yen per month (990 baht) compared to 5,138 yen per month (1,200 baht) in 2024.
