T-Mobile and SpaceX Granted FCC Approval for Satellite SMS Service as Hericene Overwhelms the United States

T-Mobile previously announced plans to offer Direct to Cell mobile services via SpaceX Starlink’s new satellite technology by late 2024 or early 2025. However, due to the imminent threat of Hurricane Helene hitting the southwestern coast of the United States, both T-Mobile and SpaceX have expedited their plans.

Both companies have received special approval from the FCC to provide SMS communication via satellite in disaster-stricken areas. Users in affected areas, such as in Florida, who are unable to connect to T-Mobile’s base stations can now access the T-Mobile SpaceX network to send emergency SMS messages for assistance.

Prior to Hurricane Helene causing significant damage in Florida, with another storm named Milton on the horizon, both T-Mobile and SpaceX have announced readiness to provide emergency SMS services for Hurricane Milton.

TLDR: T-Mobile and SpaceX have accelerated plans to offer emergency SMS services via satellite due to the approaching Hurricanes Helene and Milton, ensuring connectivity for affected users in disaster areas.
