J.W. Kuo, the Minister of Economic Affairs in Taiwan, has stated that Taiwan has laws in place to protect advanced technology. As a result, TSMC will not be able to produce 2 nanometer technology chips in factories located outside of Taiwan.
According to Taiwan’s laws, chip manufacturers are only allowed to produce chips in factories outside of Taiwan with technology that is at least one generation behind the latest. Therefore, if TSMC’s plans proceed accordingly, the production of 2 nanometer technology products, or N2, will commence fully by the second half of 2025, followed by the next generation A16. Only after that time will the production of 2 nanometer chips outside of Taiwan be possible.
