Take-Two Sells Game Distribution Company Private Division Due to Small Scale, GTA6 Still Unmoved

Take-Two Interactive revealed their performance for the third quarter of 2024. The most anticipated news is, of course, about GTA6, and the answer remains unchanged that the release is scheduled for the fall of 2025, with no delays as rumored.

Overall, Take-Two’s business saw a 6% increase in revenue, reaching $1.47 billion, driven by hits like GTA and Borderlands. The company also has Civilization 7 set to launch in February 2025, while remastered editions of old games, similar to Red Dead Redemption 1 for PC, are in the pipeline with 5 more games.

A significant development in the latest quarter for Take-Two was the sale of their game distribution unit, Private Division, without disclosing the buyer (speculated to be an investment firm) or the value of the deal. Established in 2017, Private Division focuses on distributing indie or mid-sized studio games such as The Outer Worlds (before being acquired by Microsoft), Hades physical edition, Kerbal Space Program 2, and No Rest for the Wicked.

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, emphasized in an interview with GamesIndustry that the company’s core business revolves around AAA titles and mobile games, where they excel in managing major franchises. While Private Division has supported small studios well, their scale is not sufficient for Take-Two’s ambitions (are there any games bigger than GTA?), prompting the decision to sell. Zelnick mentioned plans to disclose details of this deal soon.

Take-Two also shut down two internal studios under Private Division, Intercept Games developing Kerbal Space Program 2, and Roll7 creating OlliOlli World, both studios having been closed prior.

TLDR: Take-Two’s Q3/2024 results showed growth, with GTA6 set for a fall 2025 release. They sold Private Division, focusing on indie games, due to scale differences and closed two internal studios.
