Tech Firm OSOM’s Smartphone Division, Formerly Team Essential, Set to Shut Down This Week

Reports suggest that OSOM, a mobile phone company founded by the team behind Essential, is preparing to close its operations within this week. OSOM was established in 2020 after Andy Rubin’s mobile company, Essential, failed and shut down. However, the hardware and software team that remained with the company believed in the opportunity to introduce new products to the market, leading to the establishment of OSOM, which stands for Out of Sight, Out of Mind.

The first product from OSOM is the OSOM OV1 smartphone, emphasizing privacy as its selling point. The company further solidifies its image with the introduction of the OSOM Privacy Cable, which claims to shut down data transmission functions.

Expanding its product line, OSOM collaborated with the crypto platform Solana to release the OV1 mobile phone under the new name Solana Saga, featuring blockchain-related features. However, at the beginning of the year, there were reports that Solana planned to launch a new crypto phone model, Saga 2, but chose not to partner with OSOM, resulting in financial difficulties for the company due to lack of funding support. In the past week, OSOM faced legal challenges after discovering that Jason Keats, one of the founders, allegedly misused company funds for personal purposes. OSOM denies these allegations, attributing them to disgruntled former employees. Nevertheless, these issues have contributed to the reports of the company’s closure.

TLDR: OSOM, a mobile phone company founded by former Essential team members, is reportedly ceasing operations this week due to financial difficulties and legal challenges, despite its efforts to innovate and introduce privacy-focused products to the market.
