Members of the Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) march in protest against the amendments to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, which now allows IT and BPO workers to work a maximum of 14 hours per day, including overtime, up from the previous 10-hour limit.
Labor representatives argue that such long working hours limit opportunities for workers to improve their skills, while business advocates push for the legal changes. In a similar vein, Narayana Murthy advocated for young people to be ready to work 70 hours a week, equivalent to 14 hours per day under this law.
In 2019, IT workers in China also debated the 996 work culture, where employees work 72 hours per week, with Jack Ma endorsing the practice.
