The Beatles’ Track Now and Then Utilizing AI Wins Grammy for Rock Song with Isolated Vocals of John Lennon

The 67th Grammy Awards have announced the winners, with The Beatles taking home the award for Outstanding Rock Performance for their song “Now and Then,” which was produced with the help of AI by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

The original version of “Now and Then” was recorded on tape with the sound of John Lennon’s voice and piano mixed together. Technological limitations in the past prevented the isolation of Lennon’s voice from the piano track. However, the band decided to utilize AI to separate Lennon’s vocals from the piano track and record a new version, resulting in a complete song that won the Grammy this year. The Recording Academy accepted this approach as AI was not the primary production tool.

In addition to winning in the Rock Performance category, “Now and Then” was also nominated for Record of the Year alongside Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”
