Dragon Quest XII made its first appearance in 2021 with only one logo image revealed, then disappeared into silence for a long time. Recently, Yuji Horii, the creator of the Dragon Quest series, appeared on his friend’s live streaming show, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, confirming that Dragon Quest XII is still in development and hoping to share more information about the game soon.
Dragon Quest XII is the first game in the series to be missing key creators who have been working together since the first installment. Koichi Sugiyama, the composer, and Akira Toriyama, the character designer, have both passed away (in 2021 and 2024 respectively), leaving Yuji Horii alone at the helm (who is also 71 years old). Furthermore, last year saw the loss of producer Yu Miyake, who moved to oversee the mobile gaming division at Square Enix.
Other information we know about DQ12 is that this installment will have a darker theme, with more mature content. The game will offer more choices and decision-making for players, and will be developed using Unreal Engine 5.
